Why is my check engine light on? Here's a look at common triggers

Why is my check engine light on? Here's a look at common triggersWhen your check engine light illuminates, it doesn't necessarily mean that catastrophic engine failure is imminent. Still, it's smart to promptly visit the shop for computerized diagnostics. This way, any emerging problems can be identified and addressed before they get worse and cost more to fix. At Absolut Autoworks, our local mechanics use the latest computer-assisted diagnostic equipment to ensure that the issue is accurately pinpointed.

Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Comes On

One common check engine light trigger is a faulty catalytic converter. It's very important that you're driving with a healthy catalytic converter so that your vehicle isn't releasing an excessive amount of toxic emissions into the environment. Common symptoms of catalytic converter trouble are worsening acceleration, decreasing fuel-efficiency, and an odor similar to rotten eggs.

Problems with certain sensors are also often to blame for an illuminated check engine light. A bad mass airflow sensor can cause the light to come on. Signs of a faulty mass airflow sensor include engine hiccupping, as well as the engine stalling shortly after starting. A malfunctioning oxygen sensor can trigger the light as well. Symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor include worsening gas mileage and engine hesitations.

Faulty spark plugs are another potential culprit for an illuminated check engine light. Failing spark plugs can cause misfiring and rough idling, which are also symptoms of another issue that can trigger the light: bad ignition coils.

It's also possible for a bad battery to trigger the light if it's causing low voltage at the computer. And while it might seem strange, a loose or missing gas cap is another possible reason that your check engine light is on. If your gas cap isn't on tightly, then fuel is liable to evaporate before your engine gets the chance to run on it.
